Envisory carried out a study on the feasibility of importing petroleum fuels to Tonga using medium range (MR) tankers directly from Asia. Currently Tongan petroleum imports are a two step process, where fuel is delivered to Fiji on MR sized tankers, then transported to Tonga on smaller tankers.

The study assessed the feasibility and economic viability of direct MR tanker imports, which would involve investment in marine facilities and tankage. The report recommended options to the Government of Tonga on how this might be implemented.

Engineering consultancy Aurecon and economics consultancy Covec were also used on this study, and the report was released by the Tongan Government in 2010.
